What is BIRADS 3? What to do if detected?
What is BIRADS 3?
A BIRADS 3 (Probably Benign) mammogram result means there is a minor abnormality that is highly unlikely to be cancer, with less than 2% risk. Doctors usually do not recommend immediate biopsy but advise careful follow-up.
Why is Follow-Up Important?
Although the chance of cancer is low, regular follow-up ensures that if there are any changes in the lesion, they will be detected early. If the finding remains stable for 2 years, it will be reclassified as BIRADS 2 (benign finding).
BIRADS 3 Follow-Up Timeline
6 months
- Follow-up Exam : Mammogram/Ultrasound
- Purpose : Check stability of the lesion
12 months
- Follow-up Exam : Mammogram
- Purpose : Confirm stability
18 months
- Follow-up Exam : Mammogram
- Purpose : Continue surveillance
24 months
- Follow-up Exam : Mammogram
- Purpose : If stable, reclassified as BIRADS 2
If the lesion changes during follow-up (larger size or suspicious features), doctors may recommend a biopsy.
What Patients Should Do
