Microsatellite Instability (MSI): What Is It?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>

Microsatellite Instability (MSI) is a genetic abnormality that occurs when the DNA repair system fails, leading to changes in microsatellites\u2014repeated sequences of DNA. MSI is closely linked to the development of various cancers, particularly colorectal, endometrial, and gastric cancers.<\/p>

How MSI Occurs<\/b><\/span><\/h2>

Microsatellites are short, repeated DNA sequences, such as AAAAA or CGCGCG. These regions are prone to errors during cell division. Normally, the body\u2019s Mismatch Repair (MMR) system corrects these errors.<\/p>

However, when the MMR system malfunctions, errors in microsatellite regions go unrepaired, resulting in MSI. Over time, this instability can cause cells to become cancerous.<\/span><\/p>

Types of MSI<\/b><\/span><\/h2>

MSI can be classified into three types based on the level of instability:<\/span><\/p>
