What is Systemic Therapy for Cancer?

Systemic Therapy refers to cancer treatments that affect the entire body. These treatments circulate through the bloodstream, targeting cancer cells wherever they may be located. Systemic therapy is commonly used for cancers that have spread or cannot be treated with localized methods like surgery or radiation.

Types of Systemic Therapy

  1. Chemotherapy : Chemotherapy uses drugs to destroy rapidly dividing cancer cells. Administered either intravenously or orally, the drugs travel through the bloodstream, attacking cancer cells throughout the body.
  2. Hormone Therapy : This treatment is used to stop or block hormones that promote the growth of certain cancers, such as breast and prostate cancer. By reducing hormone production or blocking hormone receptors, the growth of cancer cells is slowed or stopped.
  3. Immunotherapy : Immunotherapy stimulates the body’s immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells. This approach helps the immune system target cancer more effectively.
  4. Targeted Therapy : Targeted therapy uses drugs designed to specifically target cancer cells based on their genetic mutations or abnormal proteins. This allows for more precise treatment with less damage to healthy cells compared to chemotherapy.

Applications of Systemic Therapy

Systemic therapy is often used when cancer has spread to multiple areas of the body, making localized treatments such as surgery or radiation insufficient. It can also be used before surgery to shrink tumors or after surgery to prevent cancer recurrence. In some cases, systemic therapy is combined with other treatments to maximize effectiveness.

Systemic therapy offers an effective option for treating cancer that has spread beyond the original tumor site. It plays a critical role in managing cancer by targeting the entire body through various methods such as chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy. By understanding how systemic therapy works and its various applications, patients and doctors can make informed decisions about the most appropriate treatment options.
