Can Cancer Patients Eat Sushi?

The answer is “Yes, but with caution.” Some cancer patients may need to avoid raw foods, especially during periods of weakened immunity or while receiving treatments such as chemotherapy or immunosuppressive medications.

Raw foods, including sushi and sashimi, may carry a risk of bacterial or parasitic contamination, which can be more dangerous for people with weakened immune systems.

When Can Cancer Patients Eat Sushi?

Some patients may be able to eat sushi if their overall condition is stable and they do not have treatment-related restrictions, such as:

  • Not currently receiving chemotherapy or immunosuppressive therapy
  • Having a normal immune system
  • No digestive problems
  • Choosing food from clean and reliable restaurants

However, caution is still recommended when consuming raw foods.

When Should Raw Foods Be Avoided?

Cancer patients should avoid sushi or raw foods if they:

  • Are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy
  • Have low immunity or low white blood cell counts
  • Have diarrhea, nausea, or mouth sores
  • Feel physically weak from treatment

During these periods, the body may have a reduced ability to fight infections, increasing the risk of illness from contaminated food.

Safer Sushi Alternatives

Patients who would still like to enjoy Japanese-style food may consider cooked alternatives such as:

  • Sweet egg sushi
  • Cooked shrimp sushi
  • Grilled eel sushi
  • Cooked salmon
  • Other fully cooked Japanese dishes

Choosing cooked foods may help reduce the risk of foodborne infections.

When in Doubt, Ask Your Doctor

Every cancer patient has different health conditions and treatment plans. If unsure whether a specific food is safe, patients should consult their doctor or nutrition team.

Choosing safe and appropriate foods is an important part of supporting recovery and ongoing cancer treatment.
