Should Stage 0 Breast Cancer Be Treated?
Many people wonder, “If it’s stage 0 breast cancer, do I really need treatment?” At this stage, abnormal cells are still confined within the milk ducts and have not spread into surrounding breast tissue. This condition, known as Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), is considered an early form of breast cancer. While it is not invasive yet, if left untreated, it may progress to invasive breast cancer in the future.
What Is Stage 0 Breast Cancer?
- Abnormal cells grow within the milk ducts.
- The cells have not invaded surrounding breast tissue.
- Often detected during a mammogram.
- Most patients show no noticeable symptoms.
Should It Be Treated?
The answer is “Yes.” The main goal of treatment is to prevent DCIS from developing into invasive breast cancer. Although stage 0 breast cancer is not immediately life-threatening, treatment greatly reduces future risks.
Treatment Options for Stage 0 Breast Cancer
1.Breast-Conserving Surgery (Lumpectomy)
- Suitable for small, localized lesions.
- Usually followed by radiation therapy.
2.Mastectomy
- Recommended when cancer cells spread across multiple areas of the breast.
- Reduces the risk of recurrence almost entirely.
3.Radiation Therapy
- Often combined with breast-conserving surgery to reduce recurrence.
4.Hormone Therapy
- For hormone receptor–positive DCIS.
- Lowers the chance of recurrence or new cancer in either breast.
What If It Is Left Untreated?
Without treatment, DCIS can develop into invasive breast cancer, which is more difficult to treat and has the potential to spread to other parts of the body.
Although stage 0 breast cancer is non-invasive, it still requires treatment to prevent progression into a more dangerous stage. Regular screening, mammograms, and early treatment remain the most effective ways to ensure the best outcome.
