Breast Cancer in Young Women: Early Signs and Prevention

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and its incidence is rising among younger women, particularly those under 40 or pre-menopausal. In fact, from 2016-2018, 10% of newly diagnosed breast cancer cases in Thailand occurred in women under 40, according to Cancer in Thailand Vol.X. These cases tend to be more aggressive compared to older women.

Breast Cancer Screening in Young Women

Breast cancer screening is generally recommended for women aged 40 and older through mammograms. However, for high-risk groups, such as those with a family history of breast cancer or genetic mutations, doctors may advise starting screenings earlier.

Because younger women tend to have denser breast tissue, mammograms may be less accurate, so doctors often recommend ultrasound or MRI scans for better results.

Treatment of Breast Cancer in Young Women

The treatment approach for younger women with breast cancer is similar to that for older women and may include surgery, radiation, and drug therapy. However, certain treatments, such as chemotherapy and hormone therapy, may impact fertility or induce early menopause, so family planning should be considered before starting treatment.
