Recovery After Breast-Conserving Surgery

Recover confidently, reduce complications, and return to life with quality.

Breast-Conserving Surgery (BCS), also known as lumpectomy or partial mastectomy, is a surgical procedure that removes only the cancerous tissue and a margin of surrounding healthy tissue—preserving as much of the breast as possible. After surgery, patients require ongoing care, both physically and emotionally, to promote healing, prevent complications, and prepare for subsequent treatments such as radiation therapy.

1. Proper Wound Care

  • Clean the surgical wound as instructed by your doctor.
  • Avoid rubbing or applying pressure to the incision area.
  • Watch for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, heat, pain, or discharge, and contact your doctor if they occur.

2. Preventing Arm Swelling (Lymphedema)

Lymphedema can develop when lymph nodes are removed during surgery, causing swelling in the arm on the operated side. Tips for prevention:

  • Avoid blood draws, blood pressure measurements, or injections on the affected arm.
  • Elevate the arm above heart level while resting or sleeping.
  • Perform gentle movements and stretches to promote lymph flow.

3. Physical Therapy and Movement

  • Begin physical therapy when the wound is sufficiently healed, following medical advice.
  • Perform light arm and shoulder exercises to maintain range of motion and reduce stiffness.
  • Engage in light physical activities like walking or yoga to stimulate circulation.

4. Nutritional Support for Recovery

  • Eat high-protein foods such as fish, tofu, eggs, and legumes to support tissue repair.
  • Include fresh fruits and vegetables, and avoid processed or high-sugar foods.
  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking at least 6–8 glasses of water daily

5. Emotional and Mental Health Support

  • Talk with loved ones or support groups for breast cancer survivors.
  • Seek help from mental health professionals if experiencing anxiety, depression, or body image concerns.
  • Try stress-relief activities such as music, art, meditation, or light exercise.

6. Follow-Up Appointments and Monitoring

  • Attend all scheduled medical appointments for wound checks and monitoring side effects.
  • Additional treatments such as radiation or systemic therapy may be necessary depending on pathology results.
  • Notify your doctor immediately if you notice new lumps, persistent swelling, or delayed wound healing.

summarize

Post-operative care after breast-conserving surgery goes beyond wound care. It includes holistic support for both body and mind to help patients heal safely, regain strength, and return to daily life with confidence.
