Warning Signs of Cancer Metastasis You Should Know

When cancer progresses to an advanced stage, one of the most important concerns for both doctors and patients is monitoring for metastatic symptoms. Early recognition of cancer spread can help doctors plan treatment promptly, reduce complications, and significantly improve quality of life.

What Is Cancer Metastasis?

Cancer metastasis occurs when cancer cells spread from the original tumor through the bloodstream or lymphatic system and establish new tumors in other organs. In breast cancer patients, common metastatic sites include

• Lungs and pleura
• Liver
• Bones
• Brain (more common in HER2-positive breast cancer)

Symptoms of Lung and Pleural Metastasis

Warning signs include

• Persistent dry cough
• Chest pain, especially during deep breathing
• Shortness of breath or easy fatigue
• Chest tightness

Cancer spread to the lungs or pleura may cause pleural effusion, leading to breathing difficulties.

Symptoms of Liver Metastasis

• Discomfort or fullness under the right rib cage
• Loss of appetite
• Unexplained rapid weight loss
• Yellowing of the eyes or skin
• Unusual fatigue

This is commonly found in patients with breast cancer, especially if the tumor is on the right side or if it has spread through the lymphatic and blood systems.

Symptoms of Bone Metastasis

• Deep, dull bone pain
• Pain worsening at night or during rest
• Progressive severity
• Pain in the lower back, spine, or ribs
• Pain unrelated to physical activity or injury

Bone metastasis may weaken bones, increasing fracture risk.

Symptoms of Brain Metastasis

• Severe or worsening headaches
• Nausea or vomiting, especially in the morning
• Blurred or double vision
• Weakness, balance problems, or difficulty walking
• Speech difficulties or changes in memory and behavior

Brain metastasis is more common in HER2-positive breast cancer and requires urgent MRI evaluation.
