Tumor Markers: Essential Tools for Cancer Detection

Tumor markers, also known as cancer markers, are substances produced by cancer cells or tissues in the body in response to cancer growth. These markers can be found in blood, urine, or tissue samples and are used as tools for diagnosis, monitoring treatment progress, and detecting the possibility of cancer recurrence.

Commonly Used Tumor Markers

There are many types of tumor markers, each corresponding to a specific type of cancer. Examples include: 

1. CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen)

  • Used in monitoring and diagnosing colon cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, and pancreatic cancer.
  • High levels may indicate cancer spread or progression.

2. CA-125

  • Primarily used to detect ovarian cancer and monitor treatment after surgery or chemotherapy.
  • High levels can suggest ovarian cancer recurrence.

3. PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen)

  • A marker for prostate cancer used for screening and monitoring treatment effectiveness.
  • Elevated PSA levels may indicate the presence or progression of prostate cancer.

4. AFP (Alpha-fetoprotein)

  • Used to detect liver cancer and testicular cancer.
  • High AFP levels may indicate liver cancer or tumors in the reproductive system.

5. CA 19-9

  • Used to monitor treatment for pancreatic cancer and bile duct cancer.
  • High levels may suggest pancreatic or bile duct cancer.

6. HER2 (Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2)

  • Used in breast cancer diagnosis when HER2 receptors are present on the cells.
  • High HER2 levels can indicate the effectiveness of targeted therapies like Trastuzumab.

Benefits of Tumor Markers

Limitations of Tumor Markers

  • Elevated levels may also result from non-cancerous conditions like infections or inflammation.
