AFP: A Key Marker for Early Detection of Liver Cancer

Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein produced by fetal liver cells and the yolk sac during pregnancy. In adults and children after birth, AFP levels are typically very low. However, abnormally high AFP levels may indicate certain diseases, especially liver-related conditions.

Significance of AFP in Liver Cancer Diagnosis

Tumor Marker for Liver Cancer (HCC) : Elevated AFP levels are often associated with Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of liver cancer.
Screening and Monitoring Treatment Outcomes
- Early Detection: AFP can help detect liver cancer in its early stages.
- Post-Treatment Monitoring: AFP levels are used to monitor treatment outcomes after surgery or TACE.
- Recurrence Assessment: Helps evaluate cancer recurrence.

Normal AFP Levels

Normal Range for Adults: Less than 10 ng/mL
Abnormal Level: More than 400 ng/mL may indicate a high risk of liver cancer.

Note: Elevated AFP levels do not always indicate liver cancer and must be interpreted alongside imaging tests like Ultrasound or CT Scan.

Causes of Elevated AFP Levels

1. Cancerous Conditions

Liver cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma – HCC)
Ovarian and Testicular Cancer
Stomach and Pancreatic Cancer (in some cases)

2. Non-Cancerous Conditions

Chronic Liver Diseases: Hepatitis B and C
Liver Cirrhosis
Pregnancy: Naturally high AFP levels

Limitations of AFP Testing

Low Sensitivity and Specificity: Some liver cancer patients may have normal AFP levels.
Non-Specific Elevation: AFP can rise due to non-cancerous conditions like liver cirrhosis or pregnancy.
Requires Additional Tests: AFP testing alone is not sufficient; imaging tests such as Ultrasound, CT Scan, or MRI are needed for accurate diagnosis.

AFP is a useful tumor marker for screening and monitoring liver cancer treatment, especially HCC. However, AFP testing alone is not sufficient for diagnosis. It must be used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests for accuracy in treatment and symptom monitoring.
